Schoolboy beaten to death by teacher, Egyptian ministry reports

As a future teacher this was a very concerning article.  A 12 year old boy was beaten to death by his teacher.  This poor child who was in school trying to better his life and become educated was killed because he made a mistake.  It makes me analyze using punishment in American schools and while I have previously thought that it wouldn’t be a terrible thing to bring back “hacks” this article made me remember that times have changed and using punishment would be completely unnecessary.

Egypt accused of coverup over police killing of unarmed protester

On March 17, 2015 an unarmed protestor was killed and now the Egyptian government is being accused of covering up the police violence.  This was really interesting for me because it made me think of all of the protests that have been going on in America.  I think that we need to find better ways to video everything that police officers do so that the truth can be told and both sides can be protected.

African elephants could be extinct in wild within decades, experts say

This report made me really sad because I have always thought that elephants are beautiful creatures.  I don’t necessarily think that this is the most important article, but it touched me.  Also, I do think it is important because elephants are being poached for their ivory tusks and I don’t think that killing such a beautiful animal is worth a little bit of jewelry.

Al-Shabaab Kenya attack: death toll rises to 147

147 students were killed recently by the terrorist group al-Shabaab at Garissa university.  This event was very unsettling for me because I am the same age as a lot of the people who were killed.  It really scares me to think that someone could come onto my campus and kill almost 150 of my fellow students.  I wonder what would have happened in the media had this attack been at a larger American university.

800,000 children in Nigeria 'running for their lives' says Unicef

It has been just over a year since the terrorist group Boko Haram kidnapped nearly 300 schoolgirls in Chibok.  Since then Unicef says that 800,000 children are hiding trying to avoid the Boko Haram.  These numbers are terrifying to me.  Coming from a town of only 300 it is hard for me to imagine how many children are running for their lives.  I think that something needs to be done to help these poor children who haven’t had their chance at making a successful life.

Egypt court back deportation of 'gay' Libyan man

On April 15, 2015 the Egyptian court backed the decision to deport a man who was imprisoned in 2008 for allegedly being homosexual.  It blows my mind that a government would agree to deport a man solely because of his sexual preference.  I guess I thought the whole world was becoming more accepting of sexual identity, but this case makes me rethink that.  I am proud to be from one of the first states to legalize gay marriage and I hope that soon it is legal in all parts of the world.

Ebola Outbreak: we simply could not cope, admits World Health Organization

On April 19, 2015 the World Health Organization stated that they were not prepared for the Ebola outbreak and that they have started planning for when another outbreak occurs. I find it very interesting that Ebola hasn't been in the American news in months. When the outbreak first happened every news channel was covering it, but now it seems to have disappeared completely. I have seen people on social media question if society was trying to take the attention of citizens away from something else. If there was something else that the media didn't want us to focus on what was it? And what has happened with it?

Al-Shabaab bombs UN Workers in Somalia

On April 20, 2015 nine people were killed when a van was blown up by the terrorist group al-Shabaab in Somalia.  The van was travelling from a guest house to a United Nations office.  It is interesting to me that, a vehicle carrying some very important passengers, someone didn't take better precautions to protect the passengers.  I wonder what would have happened had the bomb exploded once they reached their destination.
