Schoolboy beaten to death by teacher, Egyptian ministry reports

As a future teacher this was a very concerning article.  A 12 year old boy was beaten to death by his teacher.  This poor child who was in school trying to better his life and become educated was killed because he made a mistake.  It makes me analyze using punishment in American schools and while I have previously thought that it wouldn’t be a terrible thing to bring back “hacks” this article made me remember that times have changed and using punishment would be completely unnecessary.

Egypt accused of coverup over police killing of unarmed protester

On March 17, 2015 an unarmed protestor was killed and now the Egyptian government is being accused of covering up the police violence.  This was really interesting for me because it made me think of all of the protests that have been going on in America.  I think that we need to find better ways to video everything that police officers do so that the truth can be told and both sides can be protected.

African elephants could be extinct in wild within decades, experts say

This report made me really sad because I have always thought that elephants are beautiful creatures.  I don’t necessarily think that this is the most important article, but it touched me.  Also, I do think it is important because elephants are being poached for their ivory tusks and I don’t think that killing such a beautiful animal is worth a little bit of jewelry.

Al-Shabaab Kenya attack: death toll rises to 147

147 students were killed recently by the terrorist group al-Shabaab at Garissa university.  This event was very unsettling for me because I am the same age as a lot of the people who were killed.  It really scares me to think that someone could come onto my campus and kill almost 150 of my fellow students.  I wonder what would have happened in the media had this attack been at a larger American university.

800,000 children in Nigeria 'running for their lives' says Unicef

It has been just over a year since the terrorist group Boko Haram kidnapped nearly 300 schoolgirls in Chibok.  Since then Unicef says that 800,000 children are hiding trying to avoid the Boko Haram.  These numbers are terrifying to me.  Coming from a town of only 300 it is hard for me to imagine how many children are running for their lives.  I think that something needs to be done to help these poor children who haven’t had their chance at making a successful life.

Egypt court back deportation of 'gay' Libyan man

On April 15, 2015 the Egyptian court backed the decision to deport a man who was imprisoned in 2008 for allegedly being homosexual.  It blows my mind that a government would agree to deport a man solely because of his sexual preference.  I guess I thought the whole world was becoming more accepting of sexual identity, but this case makes me rethink that.  I am proud to be from one of the first states to legalize gay marriage and I hope that soon it is legal in all parts of the world.

Ebola Outbreak: we simply could not cope, admits World Health Organization

On April 19, 2015 the World Health Organization stated that they were not prepared for the Ebola outbreak and that they have started planning for when another outbreak occurs. I find it very interesting that Ebola hasn't been in the American news in months. When the outbreak first happened every news channel was covering it, but now it seems to have disappeared completely. I have seen people on social media question if society was trying to take the attention of citizens away from something else. If there was something else that the media didn't want us to focus on what was it? And what has happened with it?

Al-Shabaab bombs UN Workers in Somalia

On April 20, 2015 nine people were killed when a van was blown up by the terrorist group al-Shabaab in Somalia.  The van was travelling from a guest house to a United Nations office.  It is interesting to me that, a vehicle carrying some very important passengers, someone didn't take better precautions to protect the passengers.  I wonder what would have happened had the bomb exploded once they reached their destination.

Another Boko Haram Bomb

On July 1, 2014 a car bomb exploded in a busy marketplace.  It is really scary to me to think about how many bombs this one group, Boko Haram, has used in the past few years.  Personally, I think using bombs is cowardly and unnecessary.  The victims are often innocent and only targeted because the group is generally angry.  I don’t think that attacking innocent bystanders is ever going to help this group accomplish what they are trying.

Suicide Bomber on College Campus

In July 2014 a Boko Haram suicide bomber attacked a college campus in Nigeria.  This article really bothered me because I am currently on a college campus and I can’t imagine what would happen if there were a bomber on my campus.  I feel like attacking a place where people are trying to better themselves is a low blow, but it also makes sense that a group who opposes Western Education would attack a campus.

Women Suicide Bombers

In November 2014 two teenage women blew up themselves along with 30 others at a crowded market.  This attack was also linked to Boko Haram.  It is interesting to me that this specific group uses women to commit their acts of terror.  It seems to me that most acts of terrorism are committed by men, but there are many instances in which this group uses women.

Low Oil Prices Bad?

This article argued that lower oil prices were bad because more people were going to be on the road which in turn would cause high insurance premiums.  I have a hard time agreeing with this article because I think that for the most part people are conditioned to drive as little as possible, no matter what the price of petrol fuel is. I think that the lower oil prices were great because they made it easier for me to travel, in turn bringing revenue to the cities that I could visit because I could afford to drive to them.

People Fleeing from Boko Haram

People have been fleeing their homes for fear of Boko Haram.  The religious group is becoming very violent and they are kidnapping children.  It is interesting to me that a religious group could become so violent and destructive.  They are doing what they do because they do not believe in Western Education, but it seems to me that kidnapping children and starting wars isn’t going to help “ban” Western Education.  Upwards of 400,000 people have fled their homes because of Boko Haram.

American Missionary Kidnapped

An American woman was recently kidnapped in Nigeria.  She was working at a missionary when a few masked gunmen came in and kidnapped her.  Ransom is probably the reason for the kidnapping.  It is scary to me that they would kidnap an innocent woman who is trying to help them just to get money. It makes me worry about anyone who is travelling to Nigeria

'Seven-year-old girl' kills herself & 5 others

Nigeria is currently fighting with the Islam extremist group Boko Haram.  On February 22, 2015 a girl who is thought to be about 7 years old killed herself and 5 others in a suicide bombing.  I think it is outrageous that this group is using children to complete their acts of terrorism.  Most groups leave the children out of the terrorism, but this group seems ruthless.
